This year the Loritz Circus visited Alice Springs, and my good friends Mark and Barry asked me to join them. My plan was to try and get one good photo, and enjoy the show of course.
Being the only people in the back row on our side was great, as it gave me the chance to move around a little. It was my second time in two weeks photographing moving people with no flash, or tripod in low lit coloured strobe lighting conditions. It was a challenge and I learned a lot.
I learned that my camera does quite well in low light situations. If I was to go again I would try sitting in the front row with my Nikon 35mm f/1.8G Auto Focus-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras – Fixed as it would allow me to get better portrait photos having the shallower depth of field. The camera I used on this day was the Nikon D7100 24.1 MP DX-Format CMOS Digital SLR which does not have a full frame sensor, although it is a great semi-pro. The lenses I used were my Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Auto Focus-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR and my Nikon 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Auto Focus-S DX NIKKOR Zoom Lens.
Another realisation for me that day was how I love photographing the circus. The colours, the costumes, and of course the drama and entertainment. I would love to run away with the circus for a few months and capture not only them performing, but getting prepared for a show, what they do when they are winding down, the highs and the lows….it would be amazing.
I contacted the Loritz Circus a few days later and said if they let me use the photos on my blog I will give them all the high resolution jpegs and they can use them however they like. They loved the images and agreed, with the exception that the photographs were not to be sold. With that not being my intention they got their photos, and I got material to share with you all here.
Below are a few photographs taken on the day, you can see the camera settings I used for each photograph. It is good to keep trying new things as a photographer as you never know what you might learn.
