Photo Of The Week: White Sands | New Mexico
Anyone who has followed my work for a long enough knows that White Sands National Monument is one of my favorite places to photograph. This particular image ‘White Sands’ is one of my few panoramic landscape images. I love the cool colours and the smoothness and simplicity throughout the frame. It was taken on an extremely cold day and if you look closely enough you will notice little bits of snow high up in the surrounding mountains. This National Monument is located between the towns of Alamagordo and Las Cruces, in southern New Mexico.
White Sands – Blue Mountains
White Sands National Monument is surrounded by bare and beautiful dark mountains. The area is extremely dry, although most of it is covered in small grass trees called yuccas. I wanted to capture a photograph that included only the sand and the mountains. I love the contrast between the two. The original white balance was colder than this. I warmed up in Adobe Lightroom, as the blue tone was overwhelming the image. I decided to crop out the foreground, as the busyness of it distracted from the simplicity of the surrounding landscape. I am yet to print this image myself, although I plan to print it on a large stretched canvas and hang it in my house in the not too distant future. I do print a lot of my images for my market stall in Alice Springs. Unfortunately, there is not a high demand for international images in the Australian Outback.
