Photo Of The Week: Untamed Coast | Green Cape NSW

I captured this beautiful afternoon storm earlier this year on a visit to Green Cape, NSW. It is located in Ben Boyd National park on the NSW South Coast. Watching and photographing storms is my favorite thing to do. On my last visit to the area I got to view one of the most beautiful storms of 2016. I was there with my Dad and we got to see nature put on a great show. The storm began with a light shower and two vivid rainbows. As sunset approached the colour of the clouds morphed into an array of dark blue and soft pastels.

This part of the coast is well know for it’s many shipwrecks. I grew up learning the history behind the wrecks and unfortunately some have happened in my lifetime. This place means a lot to the local residents of Eden. I found it hard to name this photograph. Untamed Coast seemed the most appropriate.

Green Cape – Ben Boyd National Park

Ben Boyd National Park was established in 1971 and is currently 10,486 hectares. in size. The park was named after the Scottish born Australian entrepreneur Benjamin Boyd. He established Boydtown, the first settlement in Twofold Bay back in 1843. My parents live in Boydtown and I try to visit as often as I can.

Green Cape is located at the southern end of the park and is well known for it’s lighthouse. Approval for the lighthouse was granted in 1873 following a number of shipwrecks along this rocky coast. It was Australia’s first concrete lighthouse. It still operates today and is a popular tourist destination.

The park is also home to array of wildlife including wombats, kangaroos, seals, large goannas and around 212 different bird species. It is a great place to go camping and is home to one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. I am heading there again for Christmas and I plan to photograph the wildlife and the beaches. I am also yet to get a great shot of the lighthouse, so that is high on my list of landmarks to photograph.
