Photo Of The Week: Green Cape Rainbow
My dad and I ventured out to Green Cape Lighthouse earlier this month. When we got there this beautiful was storm passing by. It was absolutely stunning with two big rainbows stretching across the sky. I managed to get a couple of good photos and this week’s Photo Of The Week, ‘Green Cape Rainbow’ was one of them.
I Learned A Big Lesson While Photographing Green Cape!
I was lucky to get any decent photos at all, as my camera lens, and sensor were really dirty. The last time I had taken photos I had no problem. Note to self: make sure you clean your gear EVERY time you head out on a shoot.
This caused a huge problems for me from the ‘Get Go’. I was in a hurry, because I wanted to do a timelapse and I didn’t want to miss the rainbows. It was when I started shooting that I realised there were hundreds of spots showing up in the photos. I tried really hard to clean the lens, but had no luck. It wasn’t until I got home that I found out that salt water was the culprit. It that had got on there from my last shoot and it did not want to come off. The last time I had the camera out I was photographing the Pambula River Mouth about 80kms away.
It was frustrating, but I was not going to miss out on capturing that awesome storm. So I got to work, but knew I would have my work cut out for me later. I ended up having to remove hundreds of little spots, but it was worth it as I love the images I took.
I traveled to a lot of places in the last year taking photos, and I have to say there is nothing like photographing a place that you grew up in. You feel a real affiliation with the land and animals. I do think it pushed me harder as a photographer to do the place justice.
Green Cape Is Located In Ben Boyd National Park
Green Cape is located in the picturesque Ben Boyd National Park on the very southern tip of the NSW South Coast. Most people visit Green Cape to either see it’s historic lighthouse, or check the weather. Eden is a town that is well known for its fishing and whaling history. Therefore many people from the area work at sea, or have worked at sea. Ben Boyd National Park is now one of Australia’s premiere whale watching destinations. It is also home to the famous story of the ‘Killers in Eden’ or ‘Killers of Eden’, depending on who is telling the story.
The Killers of Eden story is about Old Tom and his pod of killer whales who used to help local whalers hunt whales. There are all sorts of myths and legend surrounding the story. Although I can tell you that I have spoken to people who were alive at the time and they swear that what you see in the books and documentaries really happened. Some of them witnessed it with their own eyes. It is a story that I grew up with and used to tell to tourists when I worked as a whale watching guide. The local AFL (Australian Rules Football) team is also called ‘The Whalers’.
I have provided some links to books that are about this fascinating part of world history. If you would like to buy one of these books just click on the image. I have included 3 versions of Killers of Eden the Killer Whales of Twofold Bay by Tom Mead, and Killers in Eden: The true story of killer whales and their remarkable partnership with the whalers of Twofold Bay by Danielle Clode.
