Photo Of The Week: Fox River | New Zealand
I am writing to you this week from Wanaka in New Zealand. I captured this week’s featured image at Fox Glacier on a cold and rainy afternoon last Friday. The Fox River flows from the glacier to the ocean on the South Island’s West Coast. I visited the area on my honeymoon 3 years ago and you could walk all the way up to glacier. This time the pathway had been shortened due to flash flooding in the area. It forced me to think outside of the box and focus on the gateway to the track and I have to say I have surprised myself. It has taught me to always try and maximise the photographic opportunities in adverse situations. The result here is a photograph I really love and that I may not have taken if the whole pathway was accessible.
Photographing The Fox River
The number one consideration when photographing the Fox River is the weather. The first day we arrived in the area it was quite hot and by the time we left it was freezing cold and raining. In other words the weather can change very quickly. It is important to be prepared as both you and your gear can be at risk. Also it is extremely important to remember to protect yourself against the mosquitoes and sandflies.
In your day bag make sure you pack the following protective items:
- Mosquito repellent
- 1 litre of water for every hour you are outdoors
- Sunscreen
- Raincoat or weather-proof jacket
- Wet weather protection for your camera gear – (plastic cover of some sort. I use plastic bags)
- Lens cloth
- Scarf
- Beanie
- Gloves
- Sunglasses
.
I ended up creating an Adobe Lightroom Preset for this image and I named it ‘Dark Cold Mountain’.
